Why certification matters

Every company on Certified Competent holds recognised certification — independent proof that a trader is competent, accountable and safe to let into your home.

Backed by UKAS-accredited certification bodies

Every trader listed on Certified Competent is submitted by UKAS-accredited certification bodies, which operate a range of certification schemes under Government licence or their own scheme rules. That certification gives confidence to consumers, Government and industry alike — so you can hire knowing a trader’s competence has been independently verified.

Certifications beginning “Competent Person” and “PAS 2030” are UKAS accredited. Other certifications are unaccredited but still meet recognised scheme rules and consumer protections.

The certifications you’ll find

Every company on the directory holds at least one of the following recognised certifications.

Competent Person Scheme

Registered to self-certify work in place of Local Authority Building Control. Firms prove management systems, consumer protection and trained operatives — covering replacement glazing and roofing.

CQ Assured & TrustMark Approved

Installers self-certify that work meets high standards and follows the right codes of practice and consumer protection — covering most home improvement work, with TrustMark approval.

PAS 2030

A standard focused on energy efficiency, ensuring upgrades such as insulation or new windows and doors are installed to perform efficiently.

Energy Ratings Scheme

The Window Energy Ratings Scheme rates the efficiency of windows on a simple A–G traffic-light scale, like the labels on home appliances.

Skills Cards & MTC

Skills or MTC cards evidence a site operative’s ongoing competence — the skills, knowledge and behaviours to work to current practice and Building Regulations.

Code of Conduct

Every trader signs up to a consumer Code of Conduct through membership of a recognised trade association such as Certass or NAPIT.
