Skills & qualifications
What is Certified Competent and why does it matter?
Certified Competent helps homeowners find trusted installers who are registered with Government-authorised Competent Person Schemes. These installers have demonstrated their competence, can self-certify compliant work, and help ensure your home improvements meet current Building Regulations. Choosing a Certified Competent installer gives you confidence that the work is carried out to recognised industry standards and includes important consumer protections.
How do you check that traders are competent?
Traders are assessed to make sure they meet required standards, and their work is regularly reviewed to maintain quality and compliance.
Do I need a certificate after installation?
Yes. For many glazing and home improvement projects, a Building Regulation Compliance Certificate provides evidence that the work complies with current Building Regulations. After your installation is completed and registered, the certificate is normally issued and sent to you. This document may be required when selling your property, remortgaging, or making certain insurance claims.
What happens if something goes wrong?
Certified Competent installers are required to provide consumer protection measures, including an Insurance Backed Guarantee. This helps protect homeowners if the installer ceases trading during the guarantee period. Many certification schemes also provide access to complaint handling and dispute resolution processes, giving homeowners additional peace of mind.
How do I choose the right trader?
Look for a trader who is registered with a recognised Competent Person Scheme, has the appropriate certifications for the work being carried out, provides clear quotations and guarantees, and can issue the necessary compliance certification after installation. Using the Certified Competent search service makes it easier to find installers who have already been independently assessed and meet recognised standards for competence and consumer protection.
