How Certified Competent works
All Traders listed on Certified Competent are certified by certification bodies that are authorised by Government and accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to operate certification schemes.
Being UKAS accredited gives us a duty to offer impartial, non-discriminatory certification to members, against agreed standards, so by choosing a Certified Competent member, you can be sure that the company has the ability to do a great job on your home improvement.
Find a Trader
Certified members only
Certified Competent works very differently to the ‘find a trader' schemes you find on television, such as Checkatrade and Trustatrader. These schemes are lead generation tools for businesses to help them get more work, and traders usually pay high fees every year to be featured on these sites.

Certified Competent Traders are all certified, checked and audited by a certification scheme, so you can be confident that your Trader can offer workmanship to industry standards for your project.
How Certified Competent Traders are checked
Audits from the certification bodies
- Subject to ongoing checks of company procedures
- Subject to ongoing on-site checks of work standards
- Subject to ongoing checks of site operative competence
Certification Scheme members must
- Must comply with certification scheme rules, code of conduct and dispute resolution service
- Must comply with applicable building regulations and industry codes of practice
- Must provide insurance backed guarantees that covers the work in the event the Trader is no longer trading
How Certified Competent Traders register work
Before work starts on your home
All Certified Competent traders have provided evidence that they have a suitable consumer contract format, which will describe the scope of works. Ensure you obtain a contract before work starts, it lets everyone know what the job expectations are.
When the work is complete
Your Certified Competent traders will provide you with a written guarantee which has full details on what is covered.
They will also register your job with their chosen Insurance Backed Guarantee provider.
Work registration
Your Certified Competent traders will register your installation with the certification body, self-certifying that the work meets the required scheme standards, once you have agreed you are satisfied with the work. The certification body will issue you with a certificate of compliance.
